Job Description

The Volunteer Project Lead provides operational support for the recruitment, supervision, and retention of volunteers to assist with the operational needs of Feeding San Diego. This position is primarily working to organize, set up, and facilitate volunteer projects in the Distribution Center. This position demands a positive attitude and good interpersonal communication skills including tact, patience, and an ability to describe tasks in accurately creative ways, as there is constant interaction with volunteers of all ages, donors, member agency representatives, and residents from the community at large. An essential function of this job requires lifting and lowering of packages weighing up to 50 pounds. This position also requires one’s ability to bend, stoop, walk, turn, pivot, and stand and/or sit for long periods. A candidate for this position should be familiar with or have the hand eye coordination to learn how to use warehouse equipment quickly and safely. The position is primarily located in a warehouse environment that changes pace constantly and requires a proactive individual who is able to multi-task, meets strict time constraints, give instruction for tasks and safety, and has a fine attention to detail and set procedures.


Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Saturday: 7:30 am - 4:00 pm

The following duties and responsibilities are those considered to be essential but do not represent all job functions that may be required to be performed by this position. The Volunteer Project Lead will be responsible for leading volunteer shifts on Tuesday-Thursdays (4pm-9pm) and Saturdays (730am-4pm) each week. Evening and weekend work required.  Additional shifts may be required but notice would be given. 

Volunteer Coordination

Set up, coordinate, and clean up assigned volunteer projects.

Speak to large groups, give tours, and work with volunteers during the volunteer project.

Ensure all volunteer areas are compliant with Feeding San Diego Operating Procedures for personal and food safety and cleanliness at the end of each volunteer event.

Volunteer Relations

Maintaining regular communication with Feeding San Diego volunteers, staff, and community partners to encourage ongoing and continued participation in the fight against hunger through donations of time, food, funds and voice.


The Volunteer Project Lead will interact closely with the Volunteer Programs Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, and Programs Coordinators staff to provide an educational, safe and smoothly run project, while aptly providing information to donors, potential donors, individuals in need, volunteers, agency representatives, FSD Board and staff, and others from the community



Two years supervising the work of others in a customer service directed environment or an A.A. degree from an accredited college with a concentration of course work in Business Management, Meeting & Event Planning, Social Services, or Operations Management. Other applicable experience also accepted. Customer service experience is required.


B.A. degree from an accredited college or university in Business Management, Meeting & Event Planning, Social Services, or Operations Management and a minimum of one year experience in a nonprofit environment.

Experience in volunteer coordination, special events planning, teaching skills to groups of various ages and skills, or warehousing is highly desirable.

Any combination of educational and work experience that would be equivalent to the stated minimum requirements would qualify for consideration of this position.


Outstanding customer service abilities and a positive attitude.

A desire to inspire others to action on behalf of hunger relief in San Diego County.

Ability to work nights and weekends, as needed.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Ability to work well through formal and informal channels within the organization.

Comfortable speaking in front of large groups and enjoys working with people.    

Proven success in managing and motivating volunteers.

Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

General knowledge of nonprofit organizational practices. 

Detail oriented with great organizational skills.

Flexible and able to retain new skills quickly and accurately.

Previous experience teaching skills to various ages, skills, and abilities (preferred)

Experience working in a warehouse or with warehouse equipment (preferred)
