Position Summary
The Chief Development Officer (CDO) position is an exciting opportunity for a seasoned development professional to achieve annual and campaign success within one of the area’s most dynamic nonprofits. **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***. has a 75-year history of programmatic success and an accompanying loyal, robust and active group of donors and volunteers. The current annual fundraising budget is $1.6 million dollars. Additionally, in alignment with the organization’s strategic plan and after a successful feasibility study, a multi-million dollar capital campaign is being prepared for launch later this year.
The CDO is responsible for developing and implementing the development strategy and providing leadership and guidance to inform all marketing and communications efforts. The CDO will lead a dedicated group of staff and contractors whose duties include communications, grant writing, gift processing and donor stewardship.
Primary Responsibilities
Development Planning and Reporting
Strategically designs, implements and manages the annual development plan and timeline
Reports regularly to the staff and Board leadership on fundraising progress against goals, pipeline activity and other pertinent developments
Maintains accurate accounting of all unrestricted income and its sources
Interfaces with Finance team to fulfill information requests and maintain reporting accuracy between development and finance departments
Supervises and coordinates activities of staff engaged in maintaining Raiser’s Edge and paper records for contributions and grants
Provides direction to staff for generating queries, reports and exports
Annual Fundraising
Strengthens, nurtures, sustains and grows the annual donor base through mail, email and social media efforts
Forms and maintains relationships with individual, corporate, foundation and community partners and prospects
Strategizes and implements donor campaigns (e.g., major donors, direct mail, corporate partnerships)
Produces specialized correspondence, solicitations and support materials with the intent to retain or upgrade gifts when possible
Oversees the grants consultant in research, writing and reporting
Promotes and secures participation in the Planned Giving program
Campaign Fundraising
Works in partnership with the campaign consultant to implement the associated plan
Provides support to the President & CEO, Board, Campaign Committee and other key volunteers in their campaign efforts
Ensures proper gift processing, acknowledgement and delivery of campaign stewardship items
Leadership Engagement
Provides necessary training and support to Board members and other volunteers engaged in various facets of the stewardship process
Contributes to strategic planning/projects as determined by the Board, Presidents, and Senior Management Team (Development Director participates on the Senior Management team and attends all Board meetings)
Serves as the lead staff liaison to the Development Committee
Communications & Marketing
Serves as a public representative of the organization to enhance awareness and commitment to **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***.’s work
Supervises all development and communication matters, particularly the creation of various communications such as the annual report and general PowerPoint presentations about the organization and the impact of its work
Manages the organization’s marketing, messaging and communications, including setting and monitoring adherence to branding guidelines, and creating mass communications pieces
Provides guidance and direction to staff responsible for maintaining the website and social media channels
Required Qualifications:
8-10 years of success leading and managing development efforts within an organization of comparable size within the nonprofit sector
Bachelor’s degree in business, communications, sales, or a related industry is required along with knowledge of and connections to the funding community in Alexandria, Northern Virginia and Metropolitan D.C.
Proven track record of achieving revenue targets and/or a quota of over $1M annually

Able to demonstrate impressive “fundraising smarts” within the broad scope of resource development
Proven track record of raising funds from diverse sources, including major gifts from individuals and corporations (foundation and government agencies is an added bonus in terms of skills and experiences)
Financially astute with the ability to develop budgets and effectively manage/leverage financial resources and read financial reports
Proven leadership capabilities
Strong verbal communications skills (as evidenced by public speaking experience) and demonstrated ability to write clearly and persuasively
Strong interpersonal, supervision, administration and management skills
Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks while maintaining attention to detail
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs
Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge Donor Tracking System
Ability to work with diverse groups of people
Sound judgment, professionalism and a positive attitude
